What to Do When Your Insurance Company Is Stalling

Your insurance company is stalling. Now what? I’ve seen it too many times—clients doing everything right, only to be met with silence or endless runarounds from their insurance company. When you’re hurt, dealing with medical bills, or missing work, the last thing you need is to feel like your claim is stuck in limbo. If that’s happening to you, you’re not alone—and there are steps you can take.
Signs the Insurance Company May Be Stalling
It’s not always obvious at first, but if your gut is telling you something isn’t right, watch for these red flags:
-
They stop responding to your calls or emails.
-
You’re asked for the same documents over and over.
-
Your adjuster keeps changing, and you’re having to start over each time.
-
You get vague answers when you ask for a timeline.
-
They keep asking for unnecessary paperwork that doesn’t move things forward.
Insurance companies sometimes delay intentionally—hoping you’ll give up, settle for less, or just run out of energy.
What You Can Do
Here’s what I tell my clients when this happens:
-
Document everything. Save emails, note down phone calls, dates, who you spoke to, and what was said. This record can be powerful.
-
Follow up—politely but firmly. Don’t be afraid to ask for updates and hold them accountable.
-
Know your policy. Understanding what you’re entitled to gives you the power to push back.
-
Talk to an attorney. Sometimes just having legal representation changes how quickly the insurer responds.
-
File a formal complaint, if needed. When nothing else works, reporting the company to your state’s insurance commissioner may get things moving.
